Grow, Give, Guide: Celebrate National Mentoring Month with Reach and Rise

Mentoring

January is National Mentoring Month, an opportunity to recognize the role volunteers play in helping young people develop skills, build confidence, and navigate everyday challenges. Consistent guidance and encouragement can have a lasting impact.

More than 1 in 3 young people grow up without access to a mentor, which is why volunteer involvement is so important.

Why mentoring matters

  • Nearly 9 in 10 Americans agree that more mentoring opportunities are needed

  • More than 8 in 10 support government funding to expand mentoring programs

  • Mentoring contributes to a sense of belonging, purpose, and personal growth for youth, while also enriching the lives of volunteers

Even a short period of participation can lead to positive outcomes. Youth develop skills that carry over to school, home, and daily life, while volunteers provide steady guidance and encouragement along the way.

Families involved in group mentoring have noticed meaningful changes. One parent shared, “My child enjoys talking about his feelings and has learned to manage his emotions.” Another noted, “He has become more patient and more open at home.” Participants themselves say, “I like the group, it is fun, and I have learned to walk away from conflicts instead of causing more trouble.”

This National Mentoring Month, consider the difference one person can make. Giving time and guidance helps youth succeed today and strengthens communities for the future.
